Historic Houses Tours

Furniture, paintings, porcelain, textiles, libraries and the accumulated possessions of families who stayed put for generations. Many collections were assembled over centuries and remain in the rooms they were bought for, which is rarer than it sounds and quite different from seeing the same objects in a museum. 

Friendly and professional Tour Managers, including on some tours historians and lecturers in decorative and fine arts. At many of the properties we visit we are guided by people who know these houses and their collections inside out, and understanding why a room was arranged as it was, or what a piece of furniture cost when it was new, is where these tours earn their keep. 

Both, though the lesser-known ones are often the point. Several itineraries are built specifically around houses that don't appear on the usual circuit, and they tend to be quieter, more personal and easier to look at properly. 

It varies by property, and some rooms prohibit it entirely to protect light-sensitive textiles and paintings. Your Tour Manager will know the rules at each house, and where photography isn't permitted, there is usually a good conservation reason for it.

House visits mean walking on hard floors for extended periods, often with stairs and no lift, and the gardens and estates add more. Each itinerary sets out what to expect before you book. 

Very much so, and many guests travel solo. Shared interest naturally leads to easy conversation, and a group looking at the same room tends to fall into conversation without much prompting. 

Spring through autumn, since most houses close or reduce their opening over winter and the gardens and parkland around them are worth the extra time. Late spring and early autumn tend to be quietest.
