Discover history from those who unearth it

Our archaeology experts are working archaeologists, Egyptologists and historians, and many of them research or excavate in the places you are visiting. There is nothing quite like examining a decorated tomb alongside an experienced Egyptologist, or standing in front of prehistoric cave painting with a specialist who has spent a career studying it.

They put each site into its cultural context, explain not only what is known but how it came to be known, and are as happy discussing an unresolved argument as a settled fact.

You don't just see a site like this — you learn to read it. Once you know where to look, every broken wall is still telling you something.

Dr. Eleanor Marsh, Archaeologist & Tour Leader

Archaeology Experts: Your Questions Answered

Yes. Our archaeology tours are led by people who work in the discipline, including excavators, academics and specialists in particular periods and regions.

None at all. These tours suit everyone from the merely curious to scholars and academics, and the specialists pitch things to the group in front of them.

That is much of the point. Archaeology is interpretation drawn from evidence, and understanding how a conclusion was reached is often more interesting than the conclusion itself.

Not necessarily, since their own research and fieldwork comes first. Each departure lists who is travelling with it where that has been confirmed.
