Where art, canals and craft come together

Our Netherlands and Belgium tours travel to two countries that produced far more art than their size suggests. The Dutch Golden Age filled the museums of Amsterdam, Haarlem and The Hague, where Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and van Gogh's Sunflowers hang among the most famous paintings in the world. Antwerp pairs its medieval streets with Renaissance monuments and the Old Masters who worked there. And each spring Keukenhof puts millions of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths into flower, with Amsterdam's Hortus Botanicus, one of the world's oldest, a short distance away.

Each tour here is built around one shared interest, whether that's art, architecture or gardens, and you travel with specialists who love sharing it.

You don't just see a site like this — you learn to read it. Once you know where to look, every broken wall is still telling you something.

Art Masters of Holland

Art Masters in Holland

This morning, we visit the Frans Hals Museum in the charming city of Haarlem. Frans Hals was a Master Dutch Golden Age painter whose portraits are greatly admired, partly due to his use of visible brushstrokes, a new technique at the time. The Laughing Cavalier is recognised as one of, if not the greatest, portrait painting produced in the Dutch Golden Age. The museum's collection includes an extensive array of Hals' portraits, which are known for their lively and spontaneous style. In addition to Hals' masterpieces, the museum houses works by notable artists from the same period, providing a comprehensive overview of Dutch art in the 17th century.  In the afternoon, we head to the oldest museum in the Netherlands for a unique glimpse into the world of art, science and natural history. The Teylers Museum also boasts an exceptional art gallery featuring works from the Dutch Romantic period, as well as masterpieces by renowned artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael.  Meals: Breakfast Accommodation: Golden Tulip, Leiden

Essential Pompeii

Essential Pompeii

Few moments in the ancient world are as vividly documented as the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79.  We know, with a specificity that no other lost city can match, what Pompeii looked like on the day it was destroyed and it is this intimacy, a sense of a world interrupted rather than simply destroyed, that makes the sites of the Bay of Naples so extraordinary. Greek colonists, native Samnites, the Romans (of course), Bourbon excavators and World War bombers have all left their marks on these sites. This tour sets out to explore that world in depth and in context, providing expert guidance with a well-thought-out itinerary, which includes free afternoons for independent exploration and a hotel in the modern town of Pompei for easy access to sites.

Join our resident Irish expert and much-loved tour manager, Trevor Edwards, as he discovers the scenic and rugged west coast of Ireland. Home to a diverse range of colourful wildflowers and impressive geological features, this tour promises to be an experience to remember. The Burren, from the Irish bhoireann – a stony place – lies in the northwestern corner of County Clare. Over 300 square kilometres in extent, it is the largest area of karstic limestone in western Europe. At first glance, it presents a bleak appearance, but closer examination reveals the beautiful diversity of flora for which the whole region has become justly famous. The colourful exuberance and profusion of the wild flowers is simply captivating and, subject to the prevailing conditions, we can expect to see many interesting, different species.

Netherlands and Belgium Tours: Your Questions Answered

Art and architecture in the Dutch and Flemish cities, and gardens built around the Dutch bulb season. Some tours combine the two, since the museums and the bulbfields are close together.

Some travel by Eurostar, which makes these among the easier European itineraries to reach. Each tour sets out how it travels.

Museum and gallery days mean standing and walking on hard floors for long periods, and Dutch and Flemish city centres are cobbled. Bulbfield days involve extensive grounds on foot. Each itinerary carries an activity level of easy, moderate or active so you know what to expect before you book.
